Shared utilities / gas / Wi-Fi

Singapore room-rental utilities split: bill checklist and calculator

The usual argument is not the total—it is what the charge covers, which dates it covers, and what rule was agreed. This page does not set anyone’s price. It separates the original bill, billing period, headcount, air-con use, and fixed charges so you can reconcile before paying.

Before you pay: five checks

  • Ask for the original bill or a clear screenshot showing account holder, billing period, due date, and payable total.
  • Remove prior arrears, late fees, installation fees, deposits, and one-off items that do not belong to this period.
  • Confirm whether electricity, water, gas, refuse charges, and Wi-Fi are all included; “utilities” is too vague on its own.
  • Use the written rule: equal shares, occupied days, or a pre-agreed percentage/air-con rule.
  • Send the same calculation to everyone involved before the due date, and retain the bill plus calculation screenshot.

Utilities split calculator

This runs only in your browser and stores no bill or address. Enter the actual payable total, then use either an equal people-count or the written percentage split.

Your estimated shareS$60.00

This is an arithmetic tool, not a fairness or legal decision. Separate fixed fees, air-con excess charges, and old arrears before using the total.

Three common methods (agree first, then pay)

MethodUse whenExampleWatch-out
Equal splitSame household, similar stay length, no agreed high-use exceptionS$180 ÷ 3 = S$60 eachWeak fit if someone moved in or out mid-period.
Occupied daysSomeone lived there for only part of the billing periodAllocate by each person’s occupied days ÷ total person-daysDefine the bill start/end dates; do not estimate them.
Pre-agreed percentageMain tenant/landlord arrangement, room differences, or explicit air-con ruleS$180 × 40% = S$72Set the percentage and air-con rule before move-in, not after.

October 2026 planning anchor—not your quote

SP Group’s tariff page shows the regulated domestic electricity tariff for July–September 2026 as 31.91¢/kWh before GST. A quarterly tariff, retailer plan, landlord charge, and actual use are not interchangeable. For one room, use S$60–160/month as a cautious shared-utilities planning range, then recalibrate from the first actual bill.

Items that distort a split

  • Air-con hours, water heating, dryers, and WFH change consumption; living together does not automatically mean equal use.
  • Fixed Wi-Fi, cleaning, or admin fees may not be utilities. If collected together, list each item and amount separately.
  • A landlord/main tenant may use a written formula, but do not pay a request that cannot show the period and total.
  • If the account is in the owner’s or main tenant’s name, clarify payment and receipts; this is not advice to open an SP account yourself.

FAQs

What is the minimum evidence I should ask for if rent excludes utilities?

The current original bill or readable screenshot, its billing period, total, and the split formula. Then confirm whether Wi-Fi, gas, refuse fees, old arrears, or an air-con cap are included.

Is an equal headcount split always fair?

No. It works best for similar occupancy and clear shared rules. If someone stayed for only part of the period or a percentage was written down, days or the agreed percentage are easier to audit.

Can this tell me whether a charge is legal or resolve a dispute?

No. It is a communications and arithmetic worksheet, not legal advice. Keep evidence and seek appropriate independent help for a material contract, deposit, or dispute issue.
